Na wa o! Just when we thought we’ve seen it all, another heartbreaking story don land from Lekki – this time at the ever-buzzing Purple Mall. Known for its trendy vibes, retail shops, gym, and chill spots, the place is now at the center of a tragic incident that has got Lagosians talking.

On Thursday, June 26, 2025, a young man named Obinna, just 28 years old, lost his life in a freak accident at the mall’s multi-storey car park. According to reports, Obinna was a regular gym-goer at the mall. That day, security staff reportedly asked him and his friend to park on the fifth floor. But things went terribly wrong.

With no clear signs to guide him (yes o, you read right—no signage!), Obinna apparently mistook an exit route for a driveway. CCTV footage reportedly shows him driving at a normal speed before his car tragically plunged off the edge. Lagos emergency responders came, but sadly, it took them over 30 minutes to pull him out of the wreck. He didn’t survive the crash.

To make things worse, there’s confusion about what really happened. While the mall’s management claimed Obinna refused valet service, his friend who was right behind him insists they were told to park themselves. Gist plenty, but one thing is clear—something no add up.

In response, the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, moved quickly and sealed off Purple Mall on Wednesday, July 2. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab made it clear—Lagos no dey joke with public safety. He stated that a full structural and safety investigation is now underway.

This tragic incident has sparked wider debates about safety in Naija’s many shopping and lifestyle centers. People dey ask: are our malls just looking flashy on the outside while neglecting basic safety rules?

Purple Mall, managed by Purple Group, is popular among middle-class Lagosians who go there to shop, dine, or just flex small. But now, with this sad event, the spotlight is on them—and not in a good way.

For now, Lagosians dey wait to hear the outcome of the investigation. But one thing is for sure: this tragedy has exposed gaping holes in how we handle safety in public spaces. Rest in peace, Obinna. This one pain.
